One Idea: Free to Good Developer

So I had an idea the other day, I don’t have many so when I do have one I like to hold onto them very tightly, regardless of whether they’re good or bad. It was an idea for a game. I thought I’d maybe share it with you faithful TAGS readers and see what you think. This may become a regular column, but as I said, I don’t have many ideas.

First the background. I used to play World of Warcraft, I liked it; my Main was a Night Elf Rogue who I took almost to Level 50. I even bought the Burning Crusade but never set foot in Outland. Unfortunately a combination of a combusting computer and the game becoming just a little too much like hard work, even for a Dynasty Warriors loving grind monkey like me put me off the game. So I’ve not been back there for a while. Perhaps in the future we’ll have a TAGS guild on an Oceanic server I can get involved with. Naturally if they introduce the long overdue Pandaren Brewmasters I’m there.

Even so, I keep an affectionate interest for all things Blizzard and Warcraft having played and enjoyed every single game the company has made (yes Lost Vikings included). Their characters and designs, their worlds, are rich and colourful, full of a life and energy most designers dream of for their games. The millions of pages of fan artwork on the web are a testament to how Blizzard’s creations take hold of the imagination.

This isn’t up for debate by the way so don’t argue.

I also love fighting games and have done for many a year, since I was knee high to a grasshopper (maybe a mutated giant Nuclear grasshopper like the Ants in ‘Them’). I frequently worship at the altars of Soul Calibur, Tekken and Street Fighter.

I think you can see where I’m going here. Why don’t Blizzard show consoles some love, the love they long ago promised with Starcraft Ghost, and bless us with a one on one Namco style brawler starring our favourite champions from Warcraft.

Still not convinced? Consider this picture.

Now how could you not want a fighting game featuring these two characters laying into each other with combos and block breaking attacks?

Still chin scratching? Then perhaps watch this cinematic or this this one. Note the often showcased one on one battles, doesn't that just make you itch for a Warcraft fighting game?

Of course the actual combat in World of Warcraft isn’t like this. It comes down to two sprites performing a bunch of animations while a counter ticks down and you hope your combination of clicks is more effective at reducing his counter than his to yours. It’s fun, most of the time, but its not as high impact or as thrilling as pulling of combos and power moves in Soul Calibur 4.

Now imagine a beat em up with the powers and abilities from Warcraft. Casting a polymorph spell and turning an enemy into a sheep to finish him, a Draenai Paladin and a Tauren Warrior slugging it out in an arena, a night elf Druid transforming into a bear as a special move.

Just think of some of the characters you could have in the game as well, Arthas as the Lich King as an end game boss, Illidan Stormrage, Warchief Thrall, Chen Stormstout. There are countless characters who would make for fantastic warriors in a Warcraft fighting game. The hard task would be just trying to wittle the list down to a few characters.

Arthas, the unspoken goal of goth boys every where

So that’s the idea. It’s taking root in my brain and will not let go. Lets be honest, if Blizzard made this game it would make truck loads of money. Blizzard and Activision could buy all their staff a second Ferrari. The 12 million odd Warcraft subscribers would buy it, all the lapsed Warcraft players would buy it, fighting fans would buy it. Heck it could be the biggest selling fighting game of all time even if it turns out not that great.

Blizzard, make this game. My joy is all the payment I require for the idea.

Plus a possible creative consultant fee which we’ll work out later

...oh and you have to promise to have Pandaren Brewmasters in it.
